What happens in a 1-1 lesson?
In your first lesson you will have the opportunity to discuss your needs and areas of interest so that lessons can be tailored to meet your requirements. Teaching will be centred on an approach that seeks increased ease of movement for you whilst reducing rather than aggravating any pain or discomfort you may bring with you.
In a one-to-one Alexander Technique lesson you will learn through both verbal and hands-on guidance. The hands-on work uses very gentle touch usually on the neck, head, back, shoulders, arms and legs. You should wear something you can sit, stand and lie down comfortably in. Trousers or leggings rather than a skirt would be suitable. You will remain fully clothed other than being asked to remove your shoes.
We will explore simple everyday movement patterns such as sitting, standing and walking to identify unhelpful muscular and postural habits. The increased awareness you develop provides you with the opportunity for positive change. You will learn skills that allow you to let go of unhelpful tension and develop improved balance, co-ordination and ease of movement. With practice you can then apply your new skills to other activities and situations in your day-to-day life such as: walking; using a computer; sport; playing a musical instrument; driving; performing; coping under pressure; or dealing with emotional strain.
The hands-on work helps me to identify patterns of muscle tension in you and to support a re-coordinating process in your muscles. It also acts to increase your own awareness of previously unidentified muscle tension so that you are able to release the tension yourself.
We will explore how release of restrictive muscle tension can be a powerful tool in improving your breathing and overall functioning.
The skills you learn in your lessons can help you to avoid strain and injury, improve your mobility and enhance your well-being. You may find that the Alexander Technique has a far broader and more positive affect on your life than you could have possibly imagined at the outset!

How many lessons?
The number of lessons you choose to have will depend on your individual needs and what you hope to achieve. We can discuss a suitable programme for you in your first lesson.
Most people notice real benefits after 6 lessons. Some experience a positive impact in their first lesson. For others it may take longer.
A taster course of 6 weekly lessons would give you some sound experience and understanding of basic principles of the Technique. You would learn skills you could apply and benefit from in your daily life.
An introductory course of 10 weekly lessons would set you up with an understanding of how you can apply the Technique to your own circumstances and give you practical self-help skills to take away and apply to positive effect in your daily life.
A course of 20-30 weekly lessons is a great way to fast-track your learning, to develop increased understanding and insight and sound skills to give you longer term benefit.
Top-up courses are very helpful for those who have already enjoyed the benefits of 10, 20 or 30 week courses. They can serve to both refresh and enhance understanding, experience and skills. Top-up courses vary in length, content and delivery and are designed to meet the needs of the individual.
